Made in Maui County Festival 2014
So it's official!
The Mad Hatter of Maui shall be one of the 130 Maui County vendors displaying their products at the premiere launch of the...
Held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center the first weekend in November, this 2 day event showcases some of the leading producers and manufactures of locally crafted items from the 3 islands in Maui county: Kaua'i, Lana'i and Maui.
Naturally, I've been spending every spare moment building up my stock, adding new prints to test market and will be available only at the festival.

For the men's shirt I used the selvage with my name for the label and color windows as a trim on the bottom front placket.
No two buttons are identical.
Cotton Couture in Brite White worked wonderfully for the pillow cases both in having a soft hand and it sews so effortlessly.

Hawaiian Influence
Some fun and wonderfully simple foods for the summer

Kalua Pork Nachos
Slow roasted Kalua pork with Australian cheddar and Asiago cheeses before being baked on the BBQ. Below, garnished with scallion curls and chive flowers. This was served with freshly made Roasted Pineapple and Mango salsa with cilantro, mint and lime juice.
Mango-Balsamic Wings
marinated for days and then baked to a gooey perfection!
Mango-Balsamic Marinade
For every 2 pounds of chicken:
1 C mango nectar (I used frozen chunks from Trader Joe's, thawed, to measure 1 C)
1/3 C balsamic vinegar
2T olive oil
1-1/2 T fresh thyme, minced
S&P to taste
If using chunks, puree in blender with remaining ingredients. If using nectar, combine all ingredients.
In my version of the recipe pictured, the wings were marinated for approximately 3 days and then cooked in a 400 degree oven (or BBQ) for 45 minutes, until the wing meat pulls easily from bone, falls apart or, they can be grilled until cooked through.

Birthday Quilt for Dad
My dad celebrated his 80th birthday on the 12th of April. Many conflicting schedules prevented us from celebrating the event on the actual day so we planned a party for him a month later.
Aside from throwing the party, we couldn't decide upon an appropriate gift until Mom, my sister Dana and I thought it would be nice for me to piece together a quilt top using fabrics that were reminiscences of many of his favorite things.
I used my signature triangle black and chose fabrics mostly of my own design, or some that I had worked on as a production manager or were the precise image we were seeking. They include puppy portraits of three of the family dogs, goldfish, wickerwork and dragonflies for his koi pond, tropical drinks, roses and veggies for his garden, and of course BBQ!
Included too are blocks of pieced and tie dyed GRAPHYX prints, BEADWORK, strike offs from my new collection CHROMA, DISCO DOT from the TANGRAM collection, SIREN SONG and up cycled shirts. The colors are warm and rich, accented by light and dark grounds, and the pointed corners of the triangles are softened by the linear blockiness of the grid-like quilting.

I use the simple shape of the 12" x 13" triangle so I can concentrate on color and moving it around the surface of the quilt.

Cold Lamb, Warm Marlin or a Few Weeks in Review
(Note: This post has been sitting around, unpublished, since mid-March. I can't quite remember the details on some of the pictures so I'll just allow this to be a simple bit of non-captioned eye candy. M)
I know it's supposed to be cold hands, warm heart but my interpretation was more appropriate for my post. As I write this post today, Saturday the 15th, we've been having heaving squalls of rain, and gusts of wind up to 50 mph, so paradise or not, we're not immune to the madness that Mutha Naychure has been throwing the entire planet. Laugh or not, hate me or not, it's chilly here with the rains. I've got the space heater on and the cats have been scratching on the door and clawing the screen, imploring me with their big surprise-birthday-party eyes. They're outdoor cats, not mine, and I love them but I just couldn't deal with them inside the house... those curiously little nosey faces getting into everything. My house is not set up for kitties running amok. So here I am, inside, hoping the winds won't bring down tree limbs which will take out the power and me trying to stay as cozy as possible on such an impossibly rainy day.

Nasturtiums
Brightly colored. Peppery. Flower. Edible.
I have always had a fondness for this plant. The bright summery, highly-saturated hot colors of red, orange, crimson, persimmon, burgundy and sometimes white. The cool, peppery watercress or arugula bite of the leaves - charming in salads, mixed into sweet butter with fresh lemon juice and zest, or steeped in champagne vinegar.

Petals heaped (generously) into a measuring cup.
Mixed with the appropriate ratio of champagne vinegar.
The strained elixir in a slim, tall-neck bottle (anyone but me think this looks like the Eye of Sauron?)
Blended with softened sweet organic butter, backyard lemon juice and zest, then rolled into a small log and frozen for future use on a juicy, grilled piece of steak or fish.
